Founder's Day 2008

You're invited to join alumni, members and guests as we celebrate the 36th anniversary of our founding at ULM. The big weekend is April 25-26, 2008. From crawfish, to golf, to a dinner and dance at the Monroe Civic Center, we'll be celebrating in style in April. For more information contact Tommy Walpole.

Dr. Joe Pujol, Ed.D., FACSM (Eta Omicron '81); I did not ever plan to go to NLU, in fact I hardly even knew it existed until one of my older brothers enrolled there. I remember when he came back home the first time wearing his ΠΚΑ shirt. After taking some ribbing from one of my other brothers he spoke about the fraternity and the quality of people in the group and, of course, the fun they had. Having been in high school when Animal House came out I had a picture in my mind about fraternities and this began to sound like a lot of fun.

During my senior year of high school I made a trip to Monroe to learn more about the school. In the meantime I was able to meet the guys in the fraternity. They were as advertised, a close knit group of men who were fun to be around and also knew how to enjoy themselves. (more)

Glossary of Rush Terms

This is a compilation of unique words and terminology that pertain to the topic of rush. Some of these expressions and phrases are common to all Fraternities.

Bid
A formal invitation to pledge a fraternity.

Brotherhood
A rushee knows this is common to all fraternities; it has a different meaning to different people, and every fraternity will claim they have the best of it. Good chapters do not waste time trying to explain brotherhood in rush, they just show it with their actions.

Deferred Rush
A regulation usually created by the school which normally applies to freshmen (i.e., fraternities are not allowed to pledge freshmen during their first school term on campus and sometimes up to the entire first year on campus).

Dry Rush
No alcohol present or being used while rushing an individual.

Formal Rush
A prescribed rush period in which dates, times and locations are dictated by the lFC or school; rushee has equal exposure to all fraternities; there are commonly numerous rules and regulations surrounding this time period.

Informal Rush
Any time outside of the formal rush period when rushing is allowed.

Open Rush
Any time outside of the formal rush period when rushing is allowed.

Pikes Illustrated
A popular title used for a rush publication that is laid out in an abbreviated magazine format.

Pledge
A pledge in Pi Kappa Alpha is someone who has pledged himself to a way of life that only begins with his pre-initiation association with our Fraternity. He has accepted a group of men whose friendship he values and who he wants to become a part of his life. He has indicated a desire to link himself in ties of Brotherhood to men whose character will help to develop his own.

Pledging
Is the probationary period during which a prospective member can fully determine if Pi Kappa Alpha is for them - and by which Pi Kappa Alpha can determine if you will be right for us.

Rush
Refers to a continuing member recruitment program; the lifeblood through which a chapter's membership is replenished and increased; to bring high caliber undergraduates into the fraternity.

S.L.A.G.
Acronym for Scholars, Leaders, Athletes & Gentlemen; the ideal Pi Kappa Alpha member.

Summer Recruitment
A comprehensive recruitment program during the summer months designed to help potential members through the transition into college life by way of fraternity involvement and rush.
