Founder's Day 2008

You're invited to join alumni, members and guests as we celebrate the 36th anniversary of our founding at ULM. The big weekend is April 25-26, 2008. From crawfish, to golf, to a dinner and dance at the Monroe Civic Center, we'll be celebrating in style in April. For more information contact Tommy Walpole.

Dr. Joe Pujol, Ed.D., FACSM (Eta Omicron '81); I did not ever plan to go to NLU, in fact I hardly even knew it existed until one of my older brothers enrolled there. I remember when he came back home the first time wearing his ΠΚΑ shirt. After taking some ribbing from one of my other brothers he spoke about the fraternity and the quality of people in the group and, of course, the fun they had. Having been in high school when Animal House came out I had a picture in my mind about fraternities and this began to sound like a lot of fun.

During my senior year of high school I made a trip to Monroe to learn more about the school. In the meantime I was able to meet the guys in the fraternity. They were as advertised, a close knit group of men who were fun to be around and also knew how to enjoy themselves. (more)

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is Fraternity Rush like?
Fraternity rush is sponsored by the ULM Office of Greek Life and the Interfraternity Council (fraternity governing body). Rush is dry (non-alcoholic) and structured so that your son visits each fraternity house giving him the opportunity to meet a wide variety of fraternity men.

Will joining the Pike Fraternity at ULM compromise my son's academics?
No -- A central mission of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity is academic excellence. When our members succeed academically, we succeed as a fraternity. Pikes are students first. Our fraternity at ULM provides twice a week study halls, we check our member's grades three times per semester, we provide an education manual, scholarships for members who succeed academically, and we keep our parents informed of our overall progress through our parents' newsletter, pikes to Parents, which is mailed once each semester. Our overall average is consistently above the ULM all-men's average and we have been recognized multiple times for earning the most outstanding grade point average at ULM, for having the most outstanding scholarship program at ULM, and for having the most outstanding scholarship program of all Pike chapters in Louisiana and Mississippi. Pi Kappa Alpha will enhance your son's academic progress, not hinder it. For the last reporting period at ULM, Spring 2005, our active chapter grade point average was a 2.92.

What about hazing?
The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity is a non-hazing fraternity. Hazing is against the policies of our International fraternity and against the policies of ULM.

What about substance abuse?
Pi Kappa Alpha strives to provide a safety net around all of its members. If we notice a problem, we go to that member to offer help. If a problem becomes too severe, we will contact our advisors for their assistance. Abuse of alcohol is strictly prohibited by our fraternity and it is not a part of any of our programming efforts. Drugs use is strictly prohibited.

Does it cost a lot to be a Pike at ULM?
No -- Pi Kappa Alpha does carry a financial commitment. Our dues pay for all our programming areas. Our fraternity has a one time pledge-in fee of $60.00 and a one time initiation fee of $200.00. Dues for our associate members are $50.00 per month and $65.00 per month for our active members.

What about living in one of the two Pike Houses at ULM?
Your son can move into either house as rooms become available. The rooms at each house require a signed lease between your son and our Housing Corporation. The rooms are private, carpeted, and high speed internet / cable is provided. Both houses have washer/dryers and plenty of public relaxing space. Both houses have quiet hours from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. M-F / 2 a.m. - 8 a.m. S-Sun / and 24/7 beginning the week prior to final examinations.

What are my son's time requirements while a pledge?
His pledge meetings are on Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. This meeting time allows him to be able to go home on the weekend if he needs to and / or study / attend church / etc. Sunday nights. He will also have twice a week study hall (days to be determined). Our fraternity is also very involved in helping those in need in our community in addition to being involved in all aspects of ULM.

Will my son and his college friends be on their own? Who helps, provides advice, guidance, and a mature/adult voice?
Our chapter has a Housing Corporation consisting of 8 alumni volunteers who oversee our two houses. We have an Alumni Association with 7 alumni volunteers who keep our alumni informed of our fraternity's progress and needs. We are also fortunate to have an advisory board consisting of 4 alumni from the chapter at ULM and a faculty advisor who works for ULM. These advisors oversee all areas of the fraternity which includes assisting your son with any situation which might arise.

How does membership in the Pike fraternity benefit my son during college AND after he graduates?
While in school, Pi Kappa Alpha will provide your son a home-away-from- home; friends to study with; a safety network around him; great times; excellent student leadership opportunities; life training by non-critical friends; the opportunity to succeed at all levels. Your son will be a Pike for life. After graduation, your son will find that his Pike fraternity brothers will stay close to each other, support each other and remain lifelong friends. Since we strive to produce successful men of character and ambition, these associations will enrich your son's alumni experience.
